Samuel Hartman is born on April 1, 1830 into the Pennsylvania-Dutch farming community. The youngest of eight children, his father dies when he is less than six months old. His mother mortgages the farm to keep the family together but is forced to sell the home and at the age of five, Samuel is placed on his uncle's farm to work for room and board as a woodchopper. Hartman speaks only German until he's 14 years old, when he moves to Medway to live with a brother where he learns carpentry.
