1895 - the brains behind Peruna’s successAn order for 72,000 bottles of Peruna comes from Waco, Texas and Dr. Hartman is so impressed he takes a train to Waco to investigate. His daughter Maribel accompanies him. In Texas, he meets Frederick Schumacher and hires him to help promote Peruna´s sales. Schumacher spends $1 million annually on ads for Peruna. It becomes the best selling tonic in the U.S. Schumacher marries Maribel. He invents the concept of paid testimonials. Customers send in their testimonials and many are paid 25 cents for their letters. He also invents the celebrity testimonial with ringing endorsements from national celebraties, politicians, and high ranking military officers to push Peruna sales. |
